When Elon Musk was around 14 years old, he had an existential crisis, he was reading various books and trying to find out the meaning of life and where has all this come from.
At the start, to him, all seemed quite meaningless and then he happened to find some books written by Nietzsche and Schopenhauer in his house, which he said no one should noterid such books at age of 14, they really negative books.
Later he read Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, which is a very positive book, to him it highlighted a very important perspective which is that a lot of times the question is harder than the answer. And if we can properly phrase the question, then finding the answer is easy.
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is the book that has inspired Elon to start SpaceX and make Humans a multi-planetary species.
Joe Rogan on his Podcast asked Elon, what the meaning of life or a purpose of life is to which he replied:
What he means is we need to better understand the universe, only then we will know what questions to ask. Then whatever question we find most close to the question the meaning of life or a purpose of life? That’s the question we can eventually get closer to finding the answer. And he thinks to the degree that we as humans can expand the scope and scale of consciousness and knowledge, it will be a good thing.
Elon is not religious, because he was raised in a scientific school of thought. But like us all, he wonders — where does all of this life come from? What is the meaning of life? How did we get to be here on this planet? What are the right questions to ask? His philosophy is to expand the scope and scale of the human consciousness so that we are able to ask the right questions about the universe and eventually find what the meaning of life is.
Musk also believes that we are most likely in a simulation. According to him if we assume the smallest rate of improvement, then games will be impossible to distinguish from reality in few years, or our civilization will end. One of those two cases will definitely occur. Therefore he believes that because we exist, we are most likely in a simulation.
If we believe Elon and if we are in a simulation, do we even have to look for the answer to the meaning of life? Or just accept that we are some computer program running in the background and the program is making us act like the character in the video game.
